The Calico has a beautiful honey stained curly maple neck and resonator with purfling and ivoroid binding. Mother-of-pearl scroll inlays adorn the ebony fingerboard. The neck has a two-way adjustable truss-rod, as do all Deering banjos. Bound in white, the peghead has an elegantly finished look. The slender neck shape is fast and easy to play. The excellent tone comes from our three-ply maple rim, the original Deering bell bronze tone-ring and zinc flange, combined with figured Eastern hard rock maple neck and resonator. All Deering banjos are fitted with a geared fifth string tuner for smooth, easy, and precise tuning. The inside walls of the resonator are tapered to maximize the sound and give you the instant response and clear tone of a Calico banjo. From the Hartford model and up, each fret is glued in place to ensure the finest fret work possible. This tedious process pays off with perfectly even frets and easy refretting in the future. Also, the inside of the resonator has a tapered side wall. More sound is directed outward through the flange holes instead of being caught inside between parallel walls. This feature increases the volume of a banjo and improves the tone. The frets of the Maple Blossom, Deluxe, Black Diamond, Sierra, and Boston are hammered or pressed in by a skilled craftsman.

The heart of the Deering Calico banjo is the Deering bronze tone-ring, meticulously fitted to the three ply rock maple rim. Deering tone-rings are machined to two thousandths of an inch tolerance for correct fit and consistent tone. This is a bell like tone-ring of precision and power.
The Calico pot is fitted with a one piece resonator flange that is thicker and stronger than many competitor's banjos. The flange highlights the warm tones and solid punch of the Deering Calico banjo.
