Banjo Bridge Setup

Set up your Banjo Bridge

So you've got your new banjo but the bridge isn't in place. It is common for some retailers and manufactuers to ship their banjos without the bridge in place. This does not mean a setup was not initially completed because nearly all banjo makers set up the instrument at the factory to ensure playability having the bridge removed for shipment. Sometimes the bridge placement is not marked on the head. This article will help you set up your banjo so you can start picking!

A simple tip is to use the 12th fret as our reference point.

1.  Make sure the strings are loose enough for the bridge to slide underneath. This will allow easy bridge string placement and you won't scratch the head! *Using a measuring device, ruler or your buddies arm, measure from the nut to the middle of the 12th
fret.

2.  Using the same distance you just measured, measure that same distance from the 12th fret to the banjo head. This is where your bridge will be placed so mark it with a pencil. Although many instruments will sound great with this placement, some may require additional setup.

3.  Tune up your banjo to the instrument to standard tuning. An electronic tuner is recommended. the Intelli IMT-500 clip on is what we use in our shop. Standard banjo tuning is DBGDG starting with the smallest (1st) string.

4.  Pluck each string while open, and then freted at the 12th
fret. Determine if the fretted note is higher or lower than the open note.  If the fretted note is higher, (sharp) the bridge is too close to the neck and needs to move toward the bottom of the banjo (tailpiece).  If the fretted note is lower, (flat) the bridge needs to be moved toword the neck.  The amount that you adjust the bridge up or down will not be much, we are talking 1/16 of an inch or less in most cases.

Enjoy your banjo. Periodic checks will keep you playing at the optimal level. Now you don't need a luthier or shop that charges an arm and a leg to set up your banjo!
